Bhubaneswar gets its First Footwear training centre

A training centre to create opportunities in the state footwear industry was inaugurated on Wednesday at the Institute of Entrepreneurship Development in the city.

The Central Footwear Training Institute in Agra, the apex institution under the Ministry of MSME, New Delhi, for footwear training, has collaborated with the state government to operate the centre.

The centre will start two training programmes in the first phase starting from February 2018 first week. The courses include one-year advance certificate in footwear design and product development and a six-month certificate programme in footwear design and production.

In the second phase, the centre will start an 18-month course – Postgraduate Diploma in Footwear Industry Entrepreneurship and Development – to create first line of entrepreneurs in the footwear industry.

L.N. Gupta, secretary of the state MSME department, said that at present there were nearly 100 units that are into production of leather and footwear products in the state. He said: “We should have a target to take the figure to more than 1,000 in the next few years in view of the tremendous growth potential in the sector.”

“The courses will facilitate setting up of new units by imparting training to the required manpower for the industry,” said Gupta.

“The government will provide necessary capital support to set up advanced machineries in the proposed training centre to facilitate in-house local training of trainees. This will help in reducing the cost of the training programmes for the students,” said department minister Prafulla Samal.
