Puma Advances Sustainability Efforts: Increased Use of Sustainable Materials and Renewable Energy

Puma significantly increased its utilization of sustainable materials last year, with seven out of ten products made from better materials. The German sports goods manufacturer emphasized the use of recycled materials to reduce its environmental impact, opting for certified sources or recycled polyester, cotton, and viscose, which have lower CO2 emissions. Puma managed to reduce CO2 emissions from materials by 32% since 2017 and aims to further decrease overall emissions by 7%, despite sales growth.

In its Sustainability Report for 2022, Puma highlighted its progress toward the goal of producing nine out of ten products using sustainable materials by 2025. Additionally, the company achieved 100% renewable energy consumption for its offices, stores, and warehouses in 2022. Puma’s suppliers also increased their adoption of renewable energy, contributing to the reduction of carbon emissions within the supply chain, where most of Puma’s emissions originate.

The core suppliers, responsible for approximately 80% of Puma’s production volume, more than doubled their renewable energy consumption in one year, from 0.2% in 2017 to 11% in 2022. This was made possible through the implementation of large-scale solar power systems and the purchase of renewable energy certificates. Puma aims to further surpass this achievement by 2025, targeting core suppliers to source 25% of their energy requirements from renewable sources.

Furthermore, Puma made significant progress in incorporating recycled materials into its products, with over 50% of the polyester used in their apparel and accessories derived from recycled sources. The company also expanded its use of recycled cotton. Puma continues its commitment to sustainable initiatives, such as the development of a biodegradable sneaker called RE:SUEDE and the scaling up of advanced polyester recycling technologies through the RE:FIBRE project, both of which are ongoing in 2023.

To uphold the rights of over 500,000 workers in Puma’s supply chain, the company collected audit reports from 510 factories involved in producing finished products and materials in 2022.
